As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "alarming" range.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of the capital registered an pollution measurement over 500, which translates to 10x the healthy limit established by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x higher than acceptable levels.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Changes

For the past four years, officials had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather begins.

However earlier this year, the newly elected regional administration appealed to the highest court to propose a easing of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and public health".

Judicial Verdict and Enforcement

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities approved the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be set off during specific hours throughout the festival.

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also sparked a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in Delhi have persisted as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst levels ever measured in China's capital, which was once considered as the world's most polluted city.

Various Contamination Sources

The situation in the city is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, rural residents illegally set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.

Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous research.

This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing approximately 10k premature deaths per year in Delhi.
